Take Actions Against E-Waste!

Although Wall-E may be cute…do your part to avoid the toxic future predicted by the film!

By the time this charming robot makes his way to your TV, the US will have completed the switch from analog to digital broadcasting.  This switch mandated by the FCC (under the influence of broadcast industry lobbyists) will occur in February of 2009.  Millions of Americans are likely to replace their TVs with newer, digital models and throw out their old one.  These old televisions will mostly end up in landfills and many will be sent overseas where workers will be paid low wages and exposed to hazardous wastes as they dismantle them.

THUS, television manufactures have an enormous responsibility to make sure that old televisions are recycled correctly. These manufacturers sold these toxic TVs to consumers and now stand to make billions of dollars selling new, digital TVs to the same consumers.  Sony has already established a takeback program, so it is possible, and it needs to be required of ALL manufacturers.

What can YOU do to help other than committing to be a responsible consumer with your television purchasing decisions?  Write to the FCC here: http://www.coopamerica.org/takeaction/fcc/ and tell them to create recycling programs for this e-waste nightmare and require manufacturers to take back their old TVs and other electronics!!

Help keep Wall-E a mere on-screen fantasy by taking action now! http://www.coopamerica.org/takeaction/fcc/
