Giant Panda Habitat Hit By Earthquake

When one of the largest recent earthquakes hit China, a new potential disaster took place. The giant panda habitat in China's Sichuan province was demolished by last month's massive earthquake. The Giant Panda has had a tough time with only around 1,600 living in the wild, and most of those are located in China. The panda is a symbolic animal for China, and some view it as the unofficial mascot of China.
When the earthquake hit the habitat, nearly all of the structures were demolished, and mudslides and falling rocks continued to inflict damage on the habitat. The habitat contained 64 pandas which escaped to the surrounding woods. One panda did not leave the structure, and was killed when a structure fell on it, and another panda is still missing. Amazingly all of the other pandas survived and have been found. See AP article here.

panda volunteer to China
As everyone knows, there are about 1,590 wild pandas live in China, especially in Sichuan there are 154 captive pandas in Chengdu, Bifengxia and Wolong. And Wolong nature reserve is a very important base for panda. However the earthquake occurred in Sichuan on May 12 let Wolong panda base seriously destroyed. Fortunately no dead body found till now except one. Almost all captive enclosures are collapsed, so most pandas of Wolong now have been transferred to Bifengxia for the security reasons to pandas.
