Is Global Warming TRUE OR FALSE?
Greenopolis Founder

I've been thinking a lot about whether "Global Warming" is just rhetoric, or if it's something that is a real issue. The term "Global Warming" is under debate as it stands, but it seems that all scientists agree that our climate is changing. Whether or not this climate change is due to humans or not is what has become the hot debate.

Pollution

As I see it, there are at least two main points on this issue:

1. Why does it matter if we can or cannot prove it right now?

- Even if our climate isn't changing, what is the worst that could happen? We waste some money on SUSTAINABLE energy, as well as protecting our air, oceans and ecosystems? What could be the worst possible scenario from this? I can't possibly see a Depression coming from this wasted money, because the money will come from the taxpayers pockets, and go into new businesses, existing businesses, the employees & workers of these businesses, and eventually trickle down into the economy.

- If we DON'T act now on preventing what are believed to be the human causes of climate change on the other hand,  we may be paying the ultimate price... the end of the world as we know it. This video proves that when we are faced with the uncertainty of our future... acting is the only solution, because the RISK of not acting is far to great: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zORv8wwiadQ

2. What does the current data & science saying about Climate Change?

- A new study just came out today that shows that "Scientists have produced further compelling evidence showing that modern-day climate change is not caused by changes in the Sun's activity."

This new research (see it here at BBC.com) makes a pretty clear case for the sun not being the cause of climate change, placing some very heavy scrutiny on the cosmic ray theory, which was one of the stronger "sceptical" arguments against climate change. This article also hits on the point in #1, that if we were act now to reduce emissions and were wrong about the causes, then we are wasting money on expensive measures to reduce carbon emissions when we in reality could continue down our current carbon emissions path.

Of course Dr Svensmark, the originator of the cosmic ray theory, disagrees with this new study and says: "Terry Sloan has simply failed to understand how cosmic rays work on clouds," he told BBC News. But another researcher Giles Harrison agrees with the new study.

- Many Governments accept that Climate Change is real. Both US Presidential candidates agree that climate change is real, and target GHG emissions as the cause. The government's Environmental Protection Agency has a large wealth of knowledge about climate change on their website: http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/

Austrialia is creating climate change policy. They are starting gradually, and enacting stringent guidelines for curbing carbon emissions 60% by 2050.

- A new Canadian study suggests that researchers need to use more data so that they don't come to a faulty conclusion on the issue of climate change.

- Scientists have been talking about climate change for years - In 1922 the U.S. Weather Bureau first reported that the "The Arctic ocean is warming up, icebergs are growing scarcer in some places and the seals are finding the water too hot." Then again in  the '70s, late '80s and early '90s, global warming was a big issue again within the scientific community. Again, this argument goes back to point #1, where if all of these scientists have been seeing climate change for decades, either they're wrong and this is the natural ups and downs of climate, or they've been right all along and we should have acted decades ago.

Polar Bears Climate Change

Conclusion

Is global warming TRUE OR FALSE... It doesn't matter! If it is true we're in big time trouble if we don't act now, if it isn't true then we may be wasting some money on an issue that is not important.

If it is true, then it is not an easy problem to solve, but if we take small steps to reduce our carbon emissions, and try to leave a smaller footprint on the climate, oceans, and eco-systems alike, we WILL BE BETTER OFF. Regardless of whether or not we are 100% sure as to the cause of climate change, these actions to reduce emissions are all positive, and will make our world a better place to live in. By gradually taking steps that will not throw economic systems into turmoil, the people will learn to live cleaner, healthier and happier lives.

One small point in your blog

You really wrote well in this and made excellent points - there is one small point that could be better, if you realise that there is not "waste of money" in changing over to cleaner, more sustainable and ever renewable technology. It will all be for the better anyway - the quality of air, the depletion of forests, everything that points to global warming disaster train is actully bad in itself, and not only can but should be improved.

As for "waste", of money or otherwise, since when is it an issue that west cares about - except when it is big industries instead of individuals that are involved?

In fact isn't it waste by individuals, of their own hard earned money and of various objects made with human labour, or precious gifts of nature - or both, that is always encouraged or even made to seem the thing to do (- not quite civilised not to do, in fact -) by using all sorts of psychological pressures through various media and so on?

So that point about waste is really a non-seqitur, isn't it?

Agreed! Even if global

Agreed!

Even if global warming was made up by the government, and completely a lie, it wouldn't matter because it is encouraging people, the government, manufactures, and researchers to look at alternative energy sources, to conserve energy, recycle, compost, etc etc

It might be the best thing to have learned, however all of our efforts are coming out a little too late and we really should have been thinking about this stuff all along. Oh well, better late than never!

its never too late is

its never too late is usually true, but we cannot reverse all the damage we have caused, only try to slow it down
