Venture Capitalists are taking notice of Presidential hopeful Barack Obama's in depth energy plan that centers around renewable energy. In Obama's energy plan, he pledges to help create five million new jobs by investing $150 billion over the next ten years in clean, renewable energy. It's his commitment, as well as his overall lead in the polls that have VC's ready and willing to pony up their own money to get in on this new "CleanTech" revolution.
If you were wondering whether or not this type of energy plan would save the US Economy, this might just be another hint that it will certainly help. Bloomberg reports today that Obama is on a path to stop global warming, as well as create economic growth by building up cleantech. This is giving Venture Capitalists, who have overall seen a huge downturn in investment opportunities even more reasons to support Obama. Dan Reicher is supporting Barack based on his renewable energy policies. Reicher is the director of climate and energy initiatives at Google.org, the search engine's phillintropic site. Dan has been working to get the message about Barack's plans out to vc's and entrepreneurs.Others supporting Obama's green initiatives include Steve Westly of the Westly Group, a Menlo Park, California-based VC firm; John Roos, CEO of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, the Palo Alto-based law firm that's represented Apple Inc. and Google; Dixon Doll, Chairman and general partner of DCM, a Menlo Park- based VC firm, and many more. They, and others from the information technology industry contributed almost $4.3 million to the Obama campaign through Sept. 2, as they see not only huge potential in new markets, but also a return on investment with Obama's plans. Renewable energy technologies are very important to these IT professionals and businesspeople as they have put over $2.4 billion into young and start-up companies that produce solar panels, bio-fuel distilled from wood chips and software that makes the electricity grid more efficient, among other things. If the VC's and the IT industry has their way, they will have Barack Obama elected, and be able to take these new fledgling industries to a new financial status, while producing clean, renewable energy, jobs, and peace of mind for millions of Americans.
