What to do about China's pollution?

China is by far the most polluting nation in the world, and that is not going to change any time soon. Their economic growth is up 10% and their population continues to grow , which can only mean one thing... they are going to need more energy. The bulk (80%) of their power comes from CO2 producing coal power.

China uses more coal then any country, and they are usually a large exporter. Due to the rate of their growing economy and population, their need for this coal has also increased and now they are importing more coal then exporting. This just shows how the demand for power is really running wild.

Coal power is not only one of the worst polluting forms of power, but the coal mines in China are the most dangerous in the world. Something like 3800 people died in coal mining accidents in China last year alone.

So what can we do? This issue is out of our hands in a way, but if we continue to live by example, we will not only be showing other countries that eco friendly behavior is not a huge hindrance on our lives and systems, but it will also be helping to counteract ALL pollution (including other countries). Eventually there will need to be some type of international sanctions that do not let a country pollute the air in excess. I know that the US has a long way to go before this could be a reality however, because if we are to point the finger we would have four pointing back.

China's pollution

I agree China is out of control. I think one the most powerful steps we could take, and possibly one of the only ways we can effectively have a hand in controlling this pollution, is to personally ban items manufactured in China. Much of their energy demands stem from the manufacturing processes. Have you noticed that nearly everything that is sold in the US comes from China? Scary.

Another upcoming huge polluter is India. They are projected to exceed the poplulation of China, and thier pollution is skyrocketing.

I think US needs to be part of international agreements and become a leading example before we can really be effective in influencing others. It's important for each of us to write our representatives and try to encourage change in legislation. We do have a long way to go, but I really do believe in the power of the people to do the right thing. I just hope we can figure out exactly what that is.

Great topic to bring up!
