Wolverine Numbers Getting Low
Yesterday the Federal Government has said that although the numbers for Wolverines in the US are low, they are not yet low enough to warrant an "endangered" lable. According to the government's numbers, there are 500 to 600 animals spread over thousands of square miles in Montana, Idaho, Washington and Wyoming. There are larger numbers within Canada and Alaska, so they say that even if the population in the lower 48 states dwindled down to nothing, the species would not become estinct. The Fish and Wildlife foundation has a different take on the number of wolverines, and say that according to the ESA (Endangered Species Act), there are not enough to sustain the species. Other species that are strong in Canada, but are all endangered in the US are gray wolves, grizzly bears, woodland caribou, Canada lynx and bald eagles. The US has never passed off the responsibility to Canada in the past with these species, so why are they now with the wolverine?
