Sometimes small is beautiful, and yesterday I spent the day
at Leave Only footprints, a green community fair at the Morasha
Jewish Day School in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA. This school makes green
part of their curriculum every day, from energy savings and recycling efforts
to solar panels on the roof to light an eternal flame indoors, a garden plot
for kids to grow their own food, Morasha incorporates sustainability lessons
everywhere.
The fair featured healthy organic foods, lovely green
products, workshops with wildlife and recycling experts, live sea creatures and
a great guitar playing rabbi leading the k-6th graders in a rousing
song_ Shomrei Adamah- Guardian of the Earth.
The fair featured one of the few Honda FCX fuel cell cars on
the road. It runs on hydrogen and produces only water emissions from its
tailpipe.
The car fills up on compressed hydrogen at a special station
in LA, and Honda , along with Greenopolis Partner Plug Power, has
developed a Home Fueling Station- a stationary fuel cell/fuel reformer that
powers and heats your home and can fill your tank as well. Look Ma, no gas cap!
See how a fuel cell works here.
While it will be a few years yet before the car is mass
produced, Honda has built a plant that will be able to build 90,000 of these
zero emissions vehicles a year. And it gets the equivalent of nearly 80 miles
to the gallon. I can’t wait to score this ride!
