We Want More from Our S'mores!

PrintPrintE-mailE-mail 1 comments

This summer, S’mores are speaking out for Fair Trade! Join in the gooey, sticky, chocolatey goodness of Global Exchange and Green America's S’mores Action!

What?

Make S'mores with Fair Trade Chocolate. Our goal is to register 1,500+.

Why?

We're calling on Hershey and the rest of the cocoa industry to END grinding poverty and abusive child labor in the cocoa fields by making a statement with our S'mores! Think of it as a big, chocolatey petition...it may be the most delicious political action you ever take! Watch our S'mores video or see the photos to see how much fun you'll have!

Where?

You can make a difference at home, making s'mores in your microwave or over a grill (or even without heating them!), every time you barbeque/campfire/bonfire with family and friends, or even organize a public S'mores Action event or serve Fair Trade S'mores at an event that is already planned within your community, social
group/club, congregation, school, or summer camp and really maximize the number of Fair Trade S'mores we make! Click here for our step-by-step checklist or promotional flyer that make it easy, or e-mail Global Exchange for a model media advisory to invite reporters to cover your event.

When?

Anytime during the whole summer, starting on Independence Day, July 4, and ending Labor Day, September 7.

Who?

YOU! Munching S'mores in solidarity with members of social justice, labor, environmental, faith-based, and educational organizations around the country.

The Process:

1. Make S'mores with Fair Trade Certified Chocolate

You can purchase Fair Trade Certified chocolate at your local store, or online at Equal Exchange, Alter Eco, Art Bar Global Exchange and Sweet Earth Organics, many of whom also ship during the summer to certain parts of the US.

2. Let Your S'mores Be Counted! Help reach the 1,500+ goal!

At every s'more-making opportunity this summer, keep a count of all the Fair Trade s'mores you eat, using our pre-made S'more petitions (choose from our list version, one-page version or creative coloring version, or make your own creative, artistic petition including your name, signature, and the number of Fair Trade S'mores you ate, and a request to Hershey to go Fair Trade). Mail the petition to us no later than September 14 and register your Fair Trade S'mores online at http://www.globalexchange.org/smores as soon as you return from a S'more-making occasion, so we can keep track of our progress in reaching our goal and get the word out if we're running short. Remember: You don't have to eat S'mores to sign the petition, and you don't have to sign the Hershey petition to register your S'mores online (though we hope you will!).

3. Spread the Word

Feeling especially ambitious? Show off your S'mores and make a visual petition to Hershey, too. Videotape your s'mores action using our photo poster* or your own poster, and upload it here. Also, don't forget to take photos and send them to fairtrade@globalexchange.org to be uploaded onto the web.

4. Learn S'more

Global Exchange has a host of other resources, including other activities to make your S'more Action even more fun, more information about Fair Trade and the problems in the cocoa industry and more ways to take action against Hershey and abusive practices. Also, be sure to check out Green America's program on Fair Trade to learn about Fair Trade, its products and producers, and what you can do to make a difference.

*Thanks to the first graders at Manhattan New School for their "Children are More Important than Chocolate" phrase, which we used on one of the posters.

People think that the literature term paper creating is the really time taking process. Nevertheless, students rely on the comparison essay service support every time when it is demanded.
