GreenHomeLady's blogMexico City Who would have thought?
Mexico City? Really? I had to follow the headline because it was so unexpected. “Mexico City Bans Stores From Distributing Plastic Shopping Bags.” It’s the kind of news one might expect to hear from our other continental neighbor. No surprise if an environmentally-savvy Canadian city like Vancouver, banned plastic bags to help the environment. In the U.S., San Francisco passed such a law in 2007. The bags are second only to cigarette butts as litter. Well, the things we don’t know about our neighbors are bound to surprise. So high-five Mexico City! That’s one solution. Smart Car Tickles My Street
Today our cul de sac experienced its first Smart Car zipping down to the end circle and back. If the pavement were skin, surely the little red car tickled the surface like a fly. From my vantage on the porch, it did look like a remote controlled toy except a pretty large fellow was behind the wheel. I’m thrilled. Our neighborhood is the perfect venue. OK George Soros, Quit Playing Around
The stock market today is climbing and I’m happily watching my solar investments fly towards the sun at this hour. (My wind investments aren’t flying so high. Their turn will come on another day, I guess.) My paper company is also doing well (surprising for an industry in decline). Over time I’m working my way through my 401k stock ,gradually replacing investments. I’m moving out of companies that are contrary to my personal beliefs (usually regarding the environment, not always) even when it means earning less in my 401k. Yes, I’m self righteous and smug about it. Arbor Day on the Great Plains
Today is Arbor Day, tree-planting day. By my lucky break on an airline ticket sale, I’m in Nebraska, where the first Arbor Day was declared in 1872. We don’t think about the great plains state as a heart of forestry. According to one account, on the first Arbor Day more than a million trees were planted in Nebraska and a thousand school children marched in the first Arbor Day parade. Now that was a movement somebody got behind. National Conversations on Climate Action
Our city is joining the National Conversation on Climate Action on Earth Day, April 22. I’m certainly up for the occasion, and I have fingers crossed for success. The goal is to have dialogue about practical steps our region can take to stave off rising sea levels that may result. It’s pretty important here, you see, because it’s predicted our town will disappear under water. I serve on the steering committee that organized the local event. Edison GreenFest Goes to the Wolves
GreenFest is down for the day. All the pieces fit into place just in time as the solar trailer opened its back wings and began to play music into the quad While the wind generator spun continuously the wolves and students mingled. The Shy Wolf Sanctuary was one of the most popular exhibitors. Learn more about the shy wolves here. Greenopolis at GreenFest-wind blogging
In fifteen minutes Edison GreenFest student day begins in the courtyard, called "the quad" at Edison State College - Collier Campus. It's sunny and pleasant. Windy though. The table drapes are flapping. We're starting with the solar trailer, wind generator, and the automotive hydrogen fuel cell at the entrance. First things first. Students get free food if they visit these three booths right away. Greenopolis Goes to GreenFest
True to their word, UPS delivered the Greenopolis exhibit display to my porch last night. It's in my car and we're headed to Edison GreenFest - Colier County's first green living festival. Greenopolis, Where Are You?
I posted the cat at the window in the front door when I left for work this morning. He's there most of the day anyway, but today he has an assignment. Watch for UPS to bring the Greenopolis exhibit display. It's 5:10 p.m. I just called home and spoke with my husband. No delivery on the porch yet; meanwhile, the cat is sprawled on the carpet, letting down his guard while washing his face. Sam's Club, Kitty Litter and My Phone
Call me So how are those 3 R's working out?
I read that China isn’t buying as much of the recyclable materials from the U.S. waste stream these days. They don’t need it to make products because we aren’t buying products. The result is that recyclable waste is backing up at the U.S. recycle broker locations. If this keeps up, when they run out of space and reserves, waste brokers will likely send into the landfill everything we’ve been striving to recycle. So how’s that 3 R’s Reduce, Reuse, Recycle message working out for us? Out of economic pinching we reduced, now recycle is in trouble. Big Glass Mountain Coming Down
