The Digital Home

The four leading chip and electronics makers, Intel, Infineon, Texas Instruments and Panasonic, will help market and test
a standard to wire together computers, TVs and entertainment systems
using electricity, phone and coaxial cable lines that already exist in
most homes.

I think this is an important and critical step for increasing energy efficiency in the home, as a computer-regulated environment is sure to be able to cut wasteful use of electricity and oil, particularly in lighting and heating systems.

Wouldn't be great to also be able to track your own power consumption on the computer by directly reading your own meter? I could see community challenge websites where members are able to compete on things like home energy consumption.

Imagine socially networking your home!
