Biodiversity Threatened Down Under

PrintPrintE-mailE-mail 0 comments

This Saturday, September 7, is National Threatened Species Day in Australia. Activists are trying to raise awareness of the fact that a full 20% of Australian species are endangered or threatened. This means that climate change and other human impacts could drive a fifth of Australia's biodiversity to extinction in the years to come.

Affected animals include the flatback turtle...

...along with 23 members of the kangaroo and wallaby family, Australia's most notable family of creatures.

These creatures are just the cutest tip of the iceberg, members of the 346 animal and 1249 plant species that are at risk in the Land Down Under.

If you live in Australia or anywhere else, take some time this weekend to consider what you can do to help some of the endangered species in your area. Our world depends upon the biodiversity that exists around us, not to mention the enjoyment that we receive from seeing all of these unique and wonderful species.
