Yao Ming may not be an Olympic Champion this year - his team lost big to the United States on the first day of group play - but according to the United Nations, he's an Environmental Champion. It marks the first time that the UN has bestowed this particular title on an individual.

The UN named Yao an Environmental Champion for the efforts he has made to promote sustainability education, and his ability to be an ambassador to nations around the world. Yao has pledged to "work with governments, the private sector and
the public to promote good and effective management of our environment
so we can preserve the planet for future generations."

The topics that he places emphasis on are the use and development of public transportation, the construction of clean and effective waste management systems, and the continued development of greener forms of energy.

Said Yao: "I sincerely believe small actions done by many
over a long period of time can really bring about positive change. By
doing a little now, we can avoid doing a lot later." I couldn't have said it better myself.
