100% Self Sufficient Island
The Danish island of Samsø has become completely self sufficient through wind, solar, and other renewable energy resources.
It started in 1997 when an engineer created and submitted a renewable energy plan to the government, and hadn't told anyone but the mayor. It won the prize and soon after intiatives started. In 2001 amount of fossil fuels used on the island decresed by 50%, by 2001 they were making enough energy to export it, and by 2005 they were producing more energy than they could use.

I see how an island could do that. . .but I don't know if the US would ever be able to do that. But it is awesome
