Decline in Honeybee=Higher food prices?
Due to the mysterious decline in honeybees, farmers are forced to cut back on crops that may result in higher food prices.
Bees and birds are responsible for pollinating 75 percent of flowering plants. Bee pollination is responsible for $15 billion annually in crop value. The decrease in honey bees began being reported in 2006 where beekeepers were losing anywhere from 30-90 percent of their hives. In 2007 it was reported they lost 31 percent, and this year 36 percent. Scientists don't know why this is happening, or what could cause so many bees to die Haagen-Daz and Burt's Bees have pledged money for research and have started efforts to try and save the bees. The House Appropriations Committee approved over $10 million for bee and disorder research and is awaiting approval by the full House and Senate.
