Build it and they will come - Recycling

I am visting my sister in southern California. There are many lifestyle differences here compared to New England. The most notable is the town's recyling program. Every home owner gets three large bins - Trash, Yard Waste, Recycling. It is so easy to recycle! It doesn't take organization, and planning to do the right thing. The community's program enables citizens to recycle without the hassle. Where I currently live, there are no large bins. There aren't even any small bins. I am not even sure who to call if I wanted to drop off my own recycling. At work, my company purchased the small ones for our kitchen. The President personally takes them to his town's recycling center each week. But it shouldn't be that hard. I know for a fact that creating these eco friendly habits are much easier when the community takes the initiative to do so as well.

California does indeed sound
California does indeed sound like a really green place. I heard a few years ago that they even somehow re-condense the gasoline that evaporates in gas stations when people fill up!
Go Cali!
California definitely has the right idea, giving people the tools to recycle encourages them to use them. I know that my apartment building provided its tennants with a recycling bin if they asked for one. Then, the apartment company would pay for the pick up. Needless to say that at the end of every week the bins were almost overflowing.
Unfortunately we are living in a world where people are getting lazier and prices for simple services are growing. I think that if people in a community got together they could come up with a solution. Maybe they rotate taking the recylables in each week. SOme places even pay people for how much they are bringing in. Maybe we could get kids involved and tell them that if they collect and organize it they can keep the money made from recycling the neighborhood's stuff.
Putting our heads together
I know that frustrated feeling you have. I'm grateful that where I live we can even co-mingle our recyclables into one large container I can roll to the street on wheels. Where my daughter lives, however, one must sign up and pay for recycling pick up, otherwise she has to drive it somewhere.
But before any recycling program can work, there has to be a business set up to use the recyclable materials. That's sometimes the reason why recycling programs have trouble getting off the ground. The cost of picking up and delivering is growing.
Buying and using products that are made from recycled materials helps.
