Finally Some Good News

This just in: Things may be a little bit better than we feared. Canadian researchers recently found that permafrost (a constantly frozen layer of soil found in colder areas) may not melt as easily as people first thought. Scientists were very concerned, because permafrost holds a high amount of carbon (twice the concentration of the atmosphere). The fear was that rising temperatures would cause the permafrost to melt, releasing large amounts of carbon and further accelerating climate change. So far, however, permafrost is not responding to changes in temperature as dramatically as glacial ice. Don't get me wrong, I'm fully aware of the severity and seriousness of climate change. But I have to say, reading story after story written about some negative impact of climate change can become draining. That's why this story was such a breath of fresh air. Of course it doesn't mean that we are saved from climate change and we can all go back to driving gas guzzlers. The changes that we have made are critical, and we have many more changes to go. Still, it was refreshing to read an article about climate change that didn't sound like the next Hollywood disaster film. (1 vote) »
