Happy Earth Day everybody! Yes, as many of you know already, April 22 is Earth Day. The green blogosphere will be abuzz with Earth Day related posts today, but I would have felt remiss if I didn’t say a bit about the day.

Over the last 38 years, Earth Day has had an enormous impact on environmental politics. Many consider the first Earth Day in 1970 to be the beginning of the modern environmental movement. A countless number of people have participated in Earth Day events since then. An estimated one billion people worldwide celebrated Earth Day 2007.

Earth Day is the perfect time to start living more sustainably. Check out my Ten Simple Green Tips to get you started. Remind your friends and family that it's Earth Day, and encourage them to consider the environmental impact of some of their choices. If you are just starting out, ideally today will only be the beginning of your journey towards more sustainable habits. Perhaps you're already on the path to sustainability and today is just a stopping point along the way. In that case, let Earth Day serve as a friendly reminder and gentle encouragement. Greenopolis is now 5,000 members strong, just in time for Earth Day, and I'm thrilled with the enthusiasm that people have shown for living greener lives.

Earth Day has always served as a call to action, but it is also a celebration of the wonderful planet we live on. If it wasn't incredible, we wouldn't be so worried about saving it. The Earth is amazingly diverse, incredibly beautiful, and most importantly, unique.

So get out there and celebrate! Check out this site for Earth Day events worldwide, or check your local paper. Enjoy your Earth Day, and remember, stay green!
