Hybrids’ saves more than just gas money!

Apparently
a hybrid car will help you save more than just gas money. I recently heard on a
morning news show that there is a tax credit called the “Alternative Motor
Vehicle Credit” for the year of 2006. (Yes, this news comes a bit late, but you never know if people may be doing some back taxes... they may as well be 'in the know!')

I
wanted to blog on this topic and hopefully let people know about it, but to
figure out the qualifications needed to be able to take advantage of this you
should probably see your own tax accountant.

What
I found online was that there are two types of credits, ranging from $250 to
$3,400 that are deducted from your final tax bill.

The
auto manufacturers are to give the IRS certification that its hybrid vehicles qualify
for credits. This is then passed from the manufacturer to the dealer to the
customer. Under the current plan, only a certain number of vehicles will
qualify for the full tax credit.

The
example I saw was this:

“Toyota sold 107,897 Priuses in 2005. Under
the new tax rules, only the first 60,000 of Toyota's hybrid products sold are eligible
for the full credit.”

The information I heard on the news show said that after 60,000 of
a specific hybrid model are sold, the tax credit becomes available at a reduced
rate. For 6 months after the 60,000th was sold, 50% of the credit
amount is available. For the six months following that, 25% of the credit is
available. After one year of reduced credits, the incentive will no longer be
available for that particular vehicle.

Again, I’m no accountant… so
you’ll really want to do some further investigating. One thing I hadn’t seen
information on is do you get your credit if you purchased your car BEFORE 2006?
If you happen to know, leave me a comment. I’d love to know!

They allow full credit for a car taken in the 1st quarter of the year with a 25% reduction for each quarter after.
If I understand their tax credit structure correctly a 2005 Prius was eligible for tax credit in 2006, but would no longer be eligible now.
Each hybrid has a specific deduction.

I don't believe it's the goverments job to reward or penalize anyone for the the type of vehicle they choose to drive. Savings at the pump is reward enough if one chooses to drive a Prius.

If we're going to have serious social change regarding the way we transport ourselves from place to place, the government will need to offer incentives to prod consumers to make those changes, IMHO.

I really don't want anyone to force me to change socially or otherwise. That's a dreadful thought! That's Marxism. Sic! Incentive is a nice word you use that in this case means discriminate against anyone who does not conform to your way of thinking. I choose my own paths freely. Make your eco arguments and convince me with real science and debate. Not by force of goverment. Please educate youself on the true job of our goverment. P.S tell them to leave my fried food alone as well.

I know what you mean. There's common sense, and there's going overboard, and rarely any middle ground.

However, when talking about the environment, we're talking about a direct threat to our existence. Your personal liberty ends where mine begins, and if you choose to drive a car that damages the environment in such a way that it threatens people's health and life, your liberty to do so needs to be curtailed.

Public smoking is a perfect example of this, and the real science exists and is proven. The science behind global warming is real as well.

Now, incentive has nothing to do with force or discrimination. Discrimination does not apply here, because people are free to choose the types of cars they want. If you choose to drive a fuel cell car, you will get rewarded. It's no different from deciding to get married and getting benefits as a result of that choice.

To suggest otherwise is really a strawman argument.

I beleive the statement "threat to our existance" is the very type of overboard you speak of, correct? As far as liberty. Well my liberty ends when I die or people who believe I'm to ignorant to make my own decisions strip them all away. I suppose all vehicles damage the enviroment. Even the almighty Prius. The public smoking argument is a silly one as well. Funny how you show in your rebuttal how you have no problems taking away liberties from those you dissagree with. You say discrimination does not apply here? Why? Because I have the right to choose the car I drive. Would this be the same right a business owner has to choose if he allows smoking in his establisment. Would this be the same right one has to enter or not enter said establishment. Let capitalism sort it out. Thats all I'm saying.
