In San Fran., They're Taking Things Slow

On August 29, people from around the country are gathering in San Fransisco to take things slow. It's called Slow Food Nation, and it is a four day event created to celebrate the Slow Food Movement. This event is organized by Slow Food USA, but the movement's beginnings lie in Europe.

What is the Slow Food Movement, you ask? The Slow Food Movement began about 20 years ago with Carlo Petrini, Italian food writer and epicure. He was growing increasingly concerned that industrialization and the quickening pace of life in the late 20th century was ruining food. Food products were coming from one central source, flavors were becoming standardized, produce from thousands of miles away was chosen over local products, and no one had the time to stop and savor a meal anyway.

As they state on their website, Slow Food USA "believes that pleasure and quality in everyday life can be achieved by slowing down, respecting the convivial traditions of the table and celebrating the diversity of the earth's bounty." Their three-pronged mission is to promote Taste Education, Defend Biodiversity, and Build Food Communities. They are also very focused on fair trade, defending local farmers, and promoting sustainable agriculture. If you want to read (a lot) more about the movement, click here.

Check out Slow Food Nation. Their schedule of Taste Pavillions, Slow Dinners, and other food-centric events is sure to make your mouth water. If you live in the Bay Area, think about paying a visit. If you don't, why not start your own slow food movement by taking the time to have a home-cooked meal with friends or family. Just remember to seek out local produce, be willing to try something new, and take the time to savor every bite. Carlo Petrini wouldn't have it any other way.

I really enjoy cooking (and baking) and the satisfaction with knowing that you did it yourself! Often times you can make meals just like those of your favorite restaurants, and even make them healthier. We still have sit down dinners at my house, and it really gives you time to enjoy the homemade food and connect with everyone.

Starting at Home

Sensible Sustainability

There was a time when my husband made our granola from the recipe in the Whole Earth Catalog. We made our bread and yogurt. We never bought soda. After raising a family of 3 children who (for a period of years but not their whole lives) were served cooked breakfasts and sit down family meals every night, I'm amazed at my slippery slope to convenience after the kids left home. We buy granola , bread and yogurt that we used to make and we eat out a lot. At least we have the local Taco Mix restaurant, an independent with family recipes. They see us regularly. I agree. We should slow down. I promise to select cook and savor at least three dinners this week.

Do you remember the game of telephone when you were a child?  One person would whisper something in someone's ear and then turn to the next person and do the same and so on.  Invariably the story mutated with each telling and wa...
