Mich. Senate votes to make state government use green energy

Associated Press - March 27, 2008 11:34 AM ET

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The Michigan Senate has voted to require that state government use more green energy, but the mandate isn't being extended to residents and businesses.

A bill approved unanimously Thursday would require that 10% of electricity in state buildings come from renewable sources by 2010. The standard would rise to 25% by 2025.

Republican senators favor their approach over proposed renewable requirements in the House that would affect all utilities and power providers in Michigan. There's concern over increased electricity prices if residential and business customers are forced to pay for more green power.

The Senate bill would let the state off the hook if renewable energy costs 5% more than traditional power.
