Advising President #44 on Global Warming
Submitted by phila on Tue, 09/30/2008 - 10:41am.
With the economy in upheaval and McCain and Obama battling it out for the nation's ear and heart, it sounds bizarre, to say the least, to predict who will influence the next president on global warming issues.
But that's exactly what David Orr and the developers of the Presidential Climate Action Project
(PCAP) are aiming to do. And as one of the nation's most important architects of environmental literacy in higher education a leading light of the sustainability movement, and a member of the Advisory Board for PCAP, Orr is coming to Balimore tomorrow, Wednesday, Oct. 1, to talk about it at the Roland Park Country School, at 7:00 p.m. The author of five books including Ecological Literacy and Earth in Mind, Orr holds multiple honors for his environmental scholarship and advocacy. His talk, Some Like it Hot, But Lots Don't: The Changing Climate of U.S. Politics, will outline the national climate-change policy that PCAP is proposing for the incoming administration. What is PCAP? An initiative of the University of Colorado School of Public Affairs in partnership with Federal and State agencies and environmental nonprofits, the plan is (to quote from the ClimateActionProject.com site) "rooted in climate science and designed to ignite innovation at every level of the American economy. Its objective is to provide presidential candidates and the President-elect with background information and educational materials on global warming, including a broad menu of diverse policy and program options for national leadership." Curious about the plan? You can download it directly here, or view it online at the PCAP site. And for the straight talk about the how's and why's, you don't want to miss Orr's presentation tomorrow. His presentation is one of a series of thought-provoking salons hosted by the Baltimore Bioneers in preparation for their second annual Conference, scheduled November 7-9 at the Maryland Institute, College of Art.
