Energy saving tips

1.  Computer

Rule of thumb:  if you will be away from your computer for more than 2 hours, turn it off.

2.  Car

Rule of thumb:  if you may idle more than 3 minutes (e.g. at the convenience store or a railroad crossing), turn off the motor.

3. In the kitchen

Frozen foods take half as long to cook if you thaw them first.  Just place in refrigerator 1 day ahead.

Meat and vegetables cook much faster when cut into smaller pieces.  E.g., consider goulasch or beef stew instead of pot roast; cut potatoes into fourths instead of halves.

Sweden - Ecological Tax Reform

In these final days of the presidential campaign we are hearing a lot about tax reform proposals--but it is only about shuffling around income taxes and capital gains taxes among different income groups.  No one is talking about fundamental change, like

Greetings!  This is Blog #7 of the EcoTipping Points Project series. Today's topic: how one town managed to eliminate the need for a new landfill. Here's the story by Amanda Suutari:

It was an ambitious plan for the small town (population 600) of Annapolis Royal to achieve zero waste by the year 2005.

Plastax on Shopping Bags

It’s ironic that something with a useful life of about 10 minutes would last for hundreds of years in our landfills.

I grew up in Germany, where everyone routinely brings their own shopping bag to the store. If you forget, you will be charged for every plastic bag the store provides.
