Triple Bottom Line

by Mary Anne Bowie, FAICP, Sarasota Green Marketplace

There are several universities around the country now offering graduate and undergraduate degrees in sustainability.  This is a new career path that our time demands.  With so many businesses interested in calling themselves green, sustainability specialists will have a lot of work to do. Sustainability specialists are trained to help businesses account for how they impact people and the planet.  The idea of the triple bottom line is to create profit by positively impacting people and the planet in corporate actions; an idea strongly adhered to by companies that are socially responsible.  Investors that are socially conscious are demanding accountability of the triple bottom line. Now that socially responsible investors are setting the standard for social and environmental reporting, many CEO’s are filing not only financial reports, but also sustainability reports.  Thus is created the work of the sustainability specialists.  To track some of your favorite national companies, visit responsibleshopper.org, a website hosted by Co-op America.  There, you will find a report card like no other.  How can a business go green? What are the practices, philosophies and product issues that need to be considered? What are the underlying ethical issues that must be in place for a business to be truly green? I taught a session on this at Sarasota Coastal Credit Union (SCCU) in June on this matter. Sarasota Green Marketplace is Sarasota’s Only All-Green Home and Building Store, providing only eco-friendly products and services and promoting Sarasota Green Connection (SGC) Approved Businesses. Please visit us at 2864 Ringling Blvd. in the Gold Tree Plaza at the corner of Ringling Blvd. and Tuttle Ave.  Questions? Feel free to call us at 941.953.3588. We are open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10am to 6pm; and on Friday and Saturday from 8am to noon.  When You are ready to GO GREEN, we’re ready to help, Right Now.
