Fur, Steak, and Lipstick

I had just begun to get into environmentalism, and I actually only ended up doing so because my appearance had slowly began changing into a hippie and people were expecting it of me, and I was at the mall with my friend who was a die hard vegetarian, and I found some amazing fur boots that were exactly what I was looking for. I didn't even think about whether the fur was real or not, but my friend did and she reminded me that it might be real, and I had decided at that moment that we should be ignorant and buy the boots. I then received a stern look from my friend, so we asked a salesperson. She unconvincingly told us that they were fake, so I preceded to buy them. For the next few days, my friend decided to bring it up that I wasn't the environmentalist I was pretending to be, though I never called myself one. I would say I had the look of a tree hugging hippie, but it was never intentional and my emphasis was always on peace rather than the environment. Anyway, so I finally got into an argument with her, and she basically told me that I shouldn't even bother doing anything to help the environment, if I wasn't going to go into an all out effort, which I guess in her opinion meant going vegetarian. At the time I was attempting it every other week, but it never stuck and she told be repeatedly that it's not a bad thing to not be vegetarian, it just shows that some people have more discipline over themselves when it comes to things they care about. And when I told her I was trying to cut back on meat whether I decided to fully go vegetarian or not, she proceeded to tell me that there was no point, if I didn't just stop altogether. I believe her exact words were "Why bother to help the environment if you're not going to help the whole environment?" The next day, I was like well I do want to go vegetarian, so I'll just make more of an effort, despite the fact that i knew she was wrong. And I told my mom about it all and she reminded about the native americans, and how much they loved and respected the environment, more so than anyone you will meet nowadays, and it hit me. We're meant to use all the resources available to us, and the more natural the better. I then started looking up how different things were made and what impact they had on our health and the environment, and I found an amazing article on the effects and plastic, and then I realized that it's much better to buy boots made out of real fur than some synthetic fur that was created in a lab. Now, I'm not saying that a fur coat would good for the environment unless it was hand made and the animal killed for it lived a good long life and was killed in chase, but I think that as far as the landfill control natural is better, and you don't have to worry about nasty plasticizers. So my views in short: Animals should be killed for food and clothing. We should reduce the amount of food and clothing we do consume. The animal should live a decent length happy life. Animal testing is just plain unnecessary. We need to stop trying to prolong life with animal testing. Natural Selection doesn't exist anymore, and that's why the world is so overpopulated and full of disease.

Thanks for sharing! I enjoyed your thought process through all of this.
Remember: Lead through action, and don’t be someone you aren’t, just because it is what other people expect. Who cares about titles and labels? Anyone can rise above that. This important thing is that you have convictions that you believe in, and that you have the inner strength to stand by them.

although i have to mention that natural selection does exist, even if it is being recently overshadowed by anthropogenic selection. All natural selection states is that change, over time, accumulate. There are still natural forces in the world to select for those changes; one of my prof's showed speciation in frogs in the south west. can't help it, i'm a science / anthropologist dork.
You're gooooddd
"Why bother to help the environment if you're not going to help the whole environment?"
I get that several times also, and I hate it when people question me on the little efforts that I put forth to save the environment. Okay, we don't have to STOP THE WORLD to SAVE THE WORLD. The little things I do and the little things others do, combines and will eventually make a hell lot of difference.
I definitely agree with your viewpoints. I feel as though you mentioned all the things I have been searching for to say and by using it to encourage others. Thanks. You're awesome
Good thoughts
I love reading about your thought process about all of this.
So many people don't even bother to recognize all that's involved in their everyday purchases.
Looking forward to hearing more from you.
Hope we can all make steps to improve life on the planet...it's the only one we've got!!
