Waste managment not paperless.
Greenopolis Founder

tHINKgREEN...

I remember about 10 years ago WM claimed it was in the process of making their opperations paperless at my division. All these years later they are nowhere near being paperless. In fact , I would be willing to bet they use and dispose of more paper from the office here today than in years past. Example: the current looney company propaganda/reader WM monday is delivered weekly in stacks. The papers sit for the most part unread in piles all week in our breakroom. Sometimes multiple weeks of these paper stacks sit next to one another unread. A manager eventually picks them up and places them in the TRASH can. I've wittnessed this many times. As I've stated in the past we have no recycling of materials conducted within the offices of WM here. Recently my division received word of a scheduled visit by a manager of great importance. The day of the alleged visit I noticed a shop manager roll out an old 2yd container not in use. He proceeded to slap a recycling sticker on the front of it to give the impression to our visitor we actually recycled. The manager of great importance cancelled his visit and now we have two TRASH cans. Anyone know if WM Monday is available online? Everytime I see the sticker on my truck that says "Last year WM recycled enough paper to save a gazillion acres of trees" I think yeah, but how many acres are we still throwing into our landfills? I'll ask again, Is this thinking green?

Still not paperless @ WM but..... route sheets are now being printed on both sides of the paper it's printed on. Reducing paper used for route sheets in half. That's Thinking a bit more green! I bet one of those "green jobs" @ WM pays a six figure salary for someone think up stuff like that.

I try my very best to use as little paper as possible. This being said, it would be impossible for me to do my job 100% paperless. And after staring at my inbox for 6 or seven hours, it is a nice break to look at something on paper, and not on a screen.

I can feel the frustrations of a company making claims, and never being able to follow through. But the corporate world is tricky, and you have to give them at least a small bit of effort for trying.

Instead of complaining about how the company as a whole fell through, which we know does nothing but get people up in arms, why not just do what you can to make your duties as paperless as possible? That was my solution. Sure, it isn’t perfect – but it accomplishes more than any amount of online complaints could ever do.

This being said, I wish you the best of luck in getting your department to carry through with their initial goals.

Thanks!!

Believe me, I do try to get the company to practice what it preaces. Just seems to be mostly in vain. I would'nt say though that I am so much complaining as I am giving up the straight dope to anyone that cares to read. Thanks for your opinion!

Questions

Red

Some good points here, but I have a few questions.

My questions stem from pure curiosity. Let’s review: By what you've stated here a few times, you;

a. Work for WM.

b. You're apparently blatantly open in your low opinion of your employer's standards in the Green Community.

c. You berate the company that you've chosen to work for [because lets be honest, we are not under autocratic rule here and you do have some say in where you work] in a place you feel assured some semblance of anonymity.

All that being said... Why then do you not do the following;

1. Write up your ideas and track down who should get them? They don't respond? Find someone else. Write to your manager, your district manager, their managers, the Public Relations people, the marketing people, etc.?

2. Decide that you're elevated sense of goodness, justice and... Well... “greenness” means more to you than your weekly income, ditch your current employer, and find someone that is much more in keeping with the way you think?

3. Walk out to those barrels of trash, empty them, and start your own private recycling program within your company? It wouldn't take much time, barely any money, and very little effort. You see those "WM Monday" flyers? At the end of their life span, pick them up, put them in your car, take them home, and put them in your recycle bin. Speak to like minded individuals at your place of employment and ask them to help, too?

And lastly, if you're truly the crusader for environment you portray yourself here to be, why not simply DO something? Isn't that truly what the movement is all about? Or do you truly think the environment best be served by people writing posts about what OTHERS should do? What actions OTHERS should take?

a.Yes, 24 years

b. Yes, but I only speak for my division.

c. What you call berate is simply me stating facts. Should I hide the truth to make everyone here feel better about WM? Yes, I've stated in the past. I have a feeling of safety here.

All that being said..........

1. Go find the in house concerrns blog, read it. I will never be retaliated again by WM for being proactive. Also I have approached several managers thru the ranks to no avail.

2. My "greenness" is not in qestion here. As far as greenness goes at my division. Be real Red. Like I said 24 years. I will continue to blog untill changes are made. Nice attempt at stifling me though.

3. Walk those barrels you say? Who said anything about barrels? I spoke of trash cans and 2yd containers for trash placement. Still need somewhere to put these recycle materials.

And lastly, I am DOING Red. I'm posting my concerns here for all to see the truth as I see it. And again I'll remind you my greeneess is not in question.
Thanks for your reply!

Seriously....

I’m unsure as to why you’re talking about being “retaliated against” by WM. I don’t see that it was part of my question. You are saying you’re trying to get in touch with the right people. Good! That’s what needs doing. In reading your “concerns” blog it seems that most of it had to do with how you cannot reach people in WM because you believe they don’t want to be reached, and that no one there is open or trustworthy. Honestly, I found myself thinking “blah blah blah” by the end of the thread. It was too reminiscent of my teenage daughter’s justifications for doing exactly what she wants regardless of the consequences.

I’m sorry. But again you did not answer the question. I did not call into question your “greenness”, nor did I say “Hey you should be quiet! I’m stifling you! I’m suppressing you!” I simply asked why, if you are so displeased and disheartened by your employer, would you continue working there? Personally, I always ask people why they would rather whine than take action. You’ve chosen to take action by whining, I understand that part. I just don’t get why you wouldn’t remove yourself simply to make your own quality of life that much better. (Nice attempt at diverting the fact that you are whiney by pointing the pouty finger of persecution in my direction, though)

My mistake for not being in on the trash receptacle ‘lingo’, but the question remains… why aren’t you doing something? Where do the recyclables normally go? If you’re saying there is NO place for any sort of recyclable materials anywhere in and around where you currently reside, then it seems to me that there may be a larger problem than just your company. Is that something people can work on? Getting the town to have a recycling campaign? What about the flyers? You had an awesome idea for making WM Monday a PDF to be distributed online… it’s a great solution. So what needs to be done to get to that?

Thanks for your reply!

Honestly ThinkGreenWhenConvenient…..I don’t believe that anywhere in my post did I question YOUR greenness. (I do believe you are rather ego-centric) What I’m saying is if you have good ideas, and you certainly seem to, why are you not expending time and effort trying to do something about them? Stating that you’re “DOING” by sitting at your computer and posting “the truth” as you see it… I’m sorry. That’s simply NOT doing. That’s whining. Do you believe that by posting here you’ll shame your company into doing something to keep you from typing up (badly, I may add) your beliefs on how they should run their company?

If so, I have quite a few things about MY company I could type up. “I hate them for not buying me a company car. I despise them for painting the office brown. It’s drastically unfair that they won’t put an office closer to my house so I don’t have to wake up so early! I WILL NOT BE SILENCED! They’ll buy me a car, move the office and repaint or I swear I’ll whine, kick, scream and … erm…. post not nice things here!!! Look at me go!!!”

Yeah. That’ll get me about as far as it seems to be currently getting you. *eyeroll*

Listen... I don't want a flame war. I've been in too many and I'm well aware that you are ill equipped to participate.... I’m just sayin’…. You have good ideas… so implement them. You’re unhappy, so do something about it. But at least take a few minutes to ponder what your *actual* impact may be by simply typing up some things while sitting at your computer pouting up a storm, and consider an alternative that may eventually lead to the resolution you are looking for.

Words are not action. Actions are louder than words.

Perfect example!

While I graciously accept your reply Red however distorted it may be. I must ask this of you, how could you expect me or anyone who reads your reply to take you seriously? After all you list your profession as Vexation on your profile? It's plain to see that in some twisted way you feel superior by attemping to annoy people by posting on topics you know nothing of. Particularly my opinion of WM as my employer. Or my concerns regarding issues I have with company policies. Now I could play the quote and bash game as well. I could point out all of the fallacies and inaccuracies in your reply. I could simply edit or delete it. But I would'nt want to stifle such a scholarly reply. You asked questions of me, I answered. Apparently you took some issue with my answers and proceeded to make it personal. Nice touch with the insults. Now for the good part. Your words will be left for all to see. They will serve as the perfect example of how managers and supervisors of WM react when posed with the very observations and concerns I blog of. I'm not saying you are employed by WM. I'm Just saying your attitude in words is similar to those I've come to know at WM. So I thank you! Please feel free to comment in the future but let's try to be a bit more civil and on topic. Your further attempts of vexation will be ignored.

P.S. Do all of you moderators and administrators have alter ego profiles?

Oooh.... run run! I may be BIG BROTHER!

Red

*sigh* I will try and make this really short, and I promise to use small syllabled words.

Answer just ONE of the original questions. Just one. Without your seriously deluded sense of persecution and paranoia.

Or... you could hurl accusations of me being part of the "administration" in your "big brother is watching me" sort of way, then claim you'll simply ignore my questions because you're truly above it all. I would expect no less from someone who wallows in self pity and whiny posts without the ability to actually defend your positions.

Apparently the three questions I originally posed simply cannot be answered by you. That may require some introspection, and to do that would mean you may find that you aren't exactly as sanctimonious as you like to appear.

Oh well. Far be it for me to think you could actually have a debate here without someone crying.

P.S. Do all petulant WM employees feel the need to spout their malcontent without any thought to how to resolve their issues?

Paperless

Folk hero

The paperless office was a neat idea- but human behavior is a tough nugget sometimes. Many folks like to read off a piece of paper rather than a computer screen. WM is not the only workplace where the paperless office failed to materialize.

The issue, as you point out so well, is not whether we use paper or not- it's if the paper is used again and again, if the waste form one use becomes the food for the next one. This is how nature does it, as my buddy Janine Benyus explains so well.

So how can you help Waste find it's way to recycling all that paper? I'll be anxious to hear?

Each of us can make a difference. Together we make THE difference!

Neat..... it was indeed.

Online WM Monday is a good idea

Wildman in the tall grass

I think your idea for an online WM Monday is a solid one. Would you consider being on a company wide ' Trouble shooting" and "solutions finding" team if that could be arranged? I'm still looking for how to transform your obvious passion into effective action and organizational learning and transformation.

You know what hasn't worked in the past. Given what you know about WM and your own skills, what could work going forward to make the difference here? I'll be your ally every step of the way!
