Refresh with a Synthetic Tree!
Hello all! I can honestly say I can't believe it has been more than half a year since I have last posted a blog on here. Well you can thank the Discovery Channel for re-showing the documentary "Hot Planet" several nights ago because it made me realize how much I've been slacking on this site and my blogs! Well, it is probably not new news for many of you, but I found it quite interesting while watching "Hot Planet" the probability of creating synthetic trees to collect large amounts of carbon dioxide in our air. Now how much CO2 are we talking here? Well, based on the tests the scientists have experimented on, the predicted one synthetic tree could absorb up to 1 ton of CO2 in one day. That is equivalent to75 cars off the road! They also calculated it would take 60 million of those trees to be produced in order to completely remove all the CO2 we have emitted into our atmosphere. Now, 60 million is a large number, which also means a LOT of money invested into a project such as this. But just think, if the county you lived in invested in synthetic trees once they have finally created a prototype, even one tree for every square mile in your region would be a DRASTIC decline in CO2 emissions. I live in one of the worst greenhouse gas emitting suburbs of Chicagoland and I would LOVE to see instead of another strip mall constructed on a lot of farmland a field of synthetic trees. Granted, the idea of synthetic trees are still being toyed with, but I truly hope scientists step on this project! In the article link I attached below, they also are trying to create a miniature personal use version of a synthetic tree to reduce the carbon footprint of a single person from everyday activities. How great would that be? Check out the link below at BCC News' website:
