Easiest ways to be "Eco" friendly
Greenopolis Founder

One of the easiest ways I have found to help the environment is not to use the plastic bags at the store.  Instead, I bring my own tote bags and then just re-use them each time we go grocery shopping.  Even though plastic is recycleable, it is better to use cloth bags because they can be washed and re-used.

Down with Plastic Bags

I recently moved to Switzerland from Kansas City. Switzerland is much like Ireland. You have to pay for every paper (no plastic) bag at the grocery store if you don't bring one.

I always carry one roll up tote in my purse for impulse purchase and have a couple larger bags for when I go to the grocery store (you do have to go to the store several times a week here).

If you get the bags that have a flat bottom you can stack items in them and I can put 3-4 times in one bag that I could a plastic one from home. And don't be afraid to stuff them full - mine hold up very VERY well!

A lot of plastic

Liv Greene

If every member of Greenopolis saved 100 plastic bags a year (that's only two a week, or the equivalent of one reusable bag), that would save....well, that would save a lot of plastic bags! Every little bit really adds up!

Trips to the supermarket...

I'm curious as to the responses I may get... I've heard (and agree with) the usage of reusable bags. The only draw back that I personally face is that with the hopes of reducing emissions (and saving a few bucks at the pump!), I find myself going to the store and stocking up, which equates to roughly one, maybe two trips a month, rather than a couple of times a week, as in the past. I've seen people picking up a couple odds and ends with their reusable bags, but rarely do I see anyone show up with a dozen of them. Any thoughts??

this suggestion may prove to

this suggestion may prove to be a bit tedious and time consuming, but it would ultimately solve your problem.....if you could bring a couple extra reusable bags and an extra person (friend, husband, child), you could have the cashier fill a couple bags, then have your partner run out to the car and empty them asap and come back with the empties. They could leave a couple empties with you so that youre not just standing there staring at the cashier uncomfortably. Anyway, this suggestion does involve probably parking really close to the entrance and have loads of groceries floating around in your trunk on the ride home, but it would solve the issue. When you get home, you can reload the bags and bring them into the house.

As an extra plus, you and your partner would probably also get your workout for the day in as well ;o)

the only this is remembering

the only this is remembering to bring the reusable bags with you! That is why I always put mine in the car so when ever I need to go in a grab something, I have them with me.

I also liked the idea that has been floating around on blogs about having to pay for using plastic bags at grocery stores. I think that would highly encourage people to use and remember to bring their reusable bags.

paying for plastic

I studied in Ireland for a semester a couple years ago, and they had already implemented that idea. They had reusable bags that you could buy at the store for fairly cheap, but if you didnt buy one or bring one, you had to pay about 20 euro cents per plastic bag...that would be about 40 cents here with todays market. per bag!

its so much easier (and cheaper), and obviously better for the environment, to just suck it up and buy reusable bags.

Reusable is much easier

I find using reusable bags much easier than using plastic bags too. Plastic bags rip if there is too much in them which makes it so you have to carry 20 bags in each hand when you use them.
