Wind Turbins - Worth the Cost ?

My family is looking at installing a wind turbine to power our house. The investment is looking to be alot. I was wondering if anyone out there has one, and may be able to provide thier opinion. If you can afford one the cost of a wind turbine is, in a sense, immaterial because the consequences, i.e. the cost of not having one if your power utility uses a fossil fuel like coal or oil, is to contribute to global warming.

They are a better alternative than solar power.
