How green is Apple?
Submitted by GreenElephant on Thu, 07/31/2008 - 12:30pm.
I'm a recent Apple products fan, and I know that Apple has its green-friendly side. I've been looking into Green-IT lately, though, and it isn't mentioned anywhere that I can see. I'm wondering if anyone knows how Apple stacks up to the greener portion of the computing world. By the way, if anyone's curious, The Daily Green featured an article yesterday featuring the top 12 Green IT users and computing service providers:http://www.thedailygreen.com/green-homes/eco-friendly/top-gr

see climatecounts.org for answer
According to climatecounts.org's scorecard, Apple scores the lowest in the Electronics category. see: http://www.climatecounts.org and http://www.climatecounts.org/scorecard_sectors.php?id=13.
I find this surprising since Apple impresses me as a foward-thinking company. I imagine the will step-up and take the lead but they better get going.
I hope Apple loves the environment as much as I love my iphone!
Apple products
I don't have any idea as to the IT end of things, but with regards to something as simple as the IPod, I know it saves me a 'ton' when it comes to no longer having to buy cd's to burn! And as far as I know, there is no recycling as of yet for that type of media?!

Thanks for the input, both
Thanks for the input, both of you! I'm a little surprised and sad that Apple scored last; there's always something on the Tech Specs page of their computers and the iPhone about their environmental commitment. I hope they step up as well!
And I know what you mean about the iPod, skymech! I love mine too! Apple actually has an iPod recycling program: http://www.apple.com/environment/recycling/ipodrecycling/
You can mail your old iPods and cell phones to be recycled by registering on the internet, then printing out a label and mailing.
I was always impressed with the extent of Apple's environmental friendliness, but hopefully this is just an incentive for them to do better.
