How can we reduce the number of cow farts?

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.

Is there anybody in here?

Sierra Nevada has won a lot of awards on effeciency. They talked about a methane recovery system for their cows a while ago. I don't know if they really tried it.

Now the cows eat the waste from the beer batches (Boiled hops and barley) and we eat the cows in the steak house.

Beef without the cow!

Is there anybody in here?

Researchers are toying with the idea of growing beef (just the muscle) with stem cells. Now that saves a lot of energy!

Well I think that people

Well I think that people don't really need to eat beef at all. Ground turkey is an excellent alternative to ground beef and it's much healthier and tastes about the same. Turkeys, chickens, and salmon are some of the best meats and I've heard very little about their environmental impact. But back to my point, if we just switch our beef intake to poultry, we'd have less cow farts. Though I'm not saying we should go to town with the poultry, we should still limit the amount of meat we eat, just eliminating beef altogether seems completely reasonable.

people can start being

people can start being vegetarians or vegans so there wouldn't be so many cows born for food and milk products which would mean less cow farts!!

Cow farts are as bad as car exaust!

violiner52

Cow farts produce so much methane that an area in the country where they raise cows can bge as polluted as a big city where there is a lot of car exaust!

violiner *_*

That's a lot of methane...

I think that the main reason why the methane from cows is causing so much damage is their surroundings. Think of a cow pasture. There's not many trees scattered around, are there? Farmers clear out a large portion completely of trees so that the cows can have more space, but does a few square feet every 30 or 40 feet really make that much of a difference? I think the cows would like it much better too to have shade and resting spots from the trees anyways.(I'm a huge animal nerd)

Harvest The Cow Farts!

Cool Rock is America's New Political Party

This is an interesting idea that we at Cool Rock have discussed. The potential energy that is out-gassing from all the Cow's Anuses is huge! If we harness that energy in a tubular vacuum that hovers outside of the animals, we would be able to compress this methane and also reduce greenhouse gases.
Check this link out for a real mind bender

This problem could be a Win Win situation for mankind. If we control the excretions of cattle and livestock, we could have more than enough fuel to recycle into electricity using clean energy. This would result in a closed loop of energy production and atmospheric protection. Imagine the energy we are losing everywhere, At Cool Rock we are proposing development of this apparatus to insert in the Cow's Anus.

We also have other ideas to make our energy production more efficient. Our recent work is about capping smokestacks over refineries and generating electricity from the effluent and heat escaping from these smokestacks..Check us out at Cool Rock!

you are a dumbass. havent you thought things through!? what about the cows? methane isnt the only environmental hazzard from cows. what about the runnoff & waste from farms that contaminate water sources & soil?

this could be a problem and

this could be a problem and i like the more natural feeding suggestions..as a sidenote do not feed cows steriods!!!

there is a pratical way to fix it.

If farmers just fed the cows grass, then maybe the farts would be less toxic to the enviroment. Cows arn't ment to eat corn or grain, thats probably the reason that their farts are toxic.

Go Vegetarian!!!! Love, Me!!!

Just Because it Tastes good Doesnt make it Right!!!

They really dont make that much of a difference... but to help GO VEGETARIAN!! (go to my site plz!!!) but over breeding does most of that

Maybe if we didn't mass

halloween.jpg

Maybe if we didn't mass produce cows for our own consumption we wouldn't have so many... cow farts! There are just too many things wrong with the idea of factory farming animals that makes me wonder why we ever started doing such sick things in the first place. Eat some f*cking vegetables people

agreed.

and did you also know, cigarettes contain the same toxins as the cow farts do? hm..

I think that is absolutely hilarious; cow farts make up the number one source of methane production. Gotta love it!

People actually beleive this cow fart myth? Maybe we can feed the cows "Soylent Green" and mix in a bit of Beano. Soylent Green sounds real nice huh? If you don't know google it.

Reduce the number of cows

Happy

I think all we really need to do to accomplish this task is cutting down on the total number of cows. Have you seen the classic family movie, "Babe"? (Based on the award winning children's novel, "Babe, the Gallant Pig")
Perhaps if we ran cows through a similar factory to prepare them for human consumption, we wouldn't need to worry about the total flatulence as much. Maybe the first step in this plan, is writing an award winning childrens book about a cow, and his affinity for horses. This might be a bit of a challenge, but I think after publishing the novel, Cow Farts will be a dilemma of the past.

"Under the Skin" by Michael Faber is an uncomfortable tale that places humans in cows' current position. Check it out at the library if you dare.

Vegetarian solution

Primmer

This is an old argument that does make sense. Americans spent a huge amount of resources converting grain to meat to food. We could conserve a lot of resources and be healthier if we ate more grain and less meat.

Exactly!

violiner52

The U.S. eats the most meat of any country in the world. if we ate less meat, it would solve an unbeleiveable amount of problems...
We would be less obese
There would be less cow farts
less grain and corn being harvested for cows, chickens, and other animals
less slaughter of innocent animals
more healthy people
etc.

violiner *_*

while the initial question

leahtoni2008.jpg

while the initial question isn't poised in the most eloquent way, this brings up an interesting point, as Primmer said. the gases produced by livestock manure do have a very negative impact on the ozone layer. it's pollution. the only way to reduce this is, of course, to raise fewer animals for consumption.

"It currently takes between 43,000 to 63,000 square feet to feed a meat eating American for one year, 12,000 to 16,000 sqft to feed a Vegetarian and only 6,000 sqft to feed a Vegan. By 2015 there will only be 9,000 sqft of farmable land per person on the planet. Either we all must adopt a vegan diet or more than 2/3 of the human population will die of starvation."

it seems like this subject

be nice to cows! They are friends not food!

it seems like this subject is making fun of going green. This is unimportant compared to global warming and trees being cut down

just to let you know

w/o land to grow food on, we wont live to see global warming boil us to death.

COWS CAUSE GLOBAL WARMING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cows are just as bad as cars in contributing to global warming! Between farting and being driven to the slaughterhouse they cause waaaay to much pollution, which causes global warming.
besides, we need trees! i am only against rainforest and other forests being cut down. reforesting is a great solution to trees being cut down. planting trees and then cutting them down has no harm!

I don't think anyone here is making fun of going green. It's just farts are funny, period. I don't care what animal is squeezing one off. It is an interesting topic though.

I think it's just the

Evil Kitty

I think it's just the prospect of harvesting farts thats funny. It might actually turn out to be a really good Idea.
