green barn management
Submitted by badao on Sat, 09/27/2008 - 7:53am.
I am re-opening a barn for rescued former race horses and want to use as many green and sustainable practices that I can. Can someone recommend resources for how to collect gray water, green manure management practices and any other clean and green ideas? Bookmark This Page |

Gray Water is not something I'm familiar with, outside of installing septic systems, years ago in the Northeast. Those systems simply leached the gray water out into a "leach field". Since moving to the south, septic systems are designed differently due to the higher water table. Systems down here collect and treat the water in tanks and use the end product to water the lawns.
As for manure, depending on the amount, you may be able to sell that to a vendor for processing. Thereby, off setting your operating costs with a bit of revenue from your waste. If we're talking smaller amounts, you may want to think about dedicating an area of the farm for a compost pile, which when combined with other organic waste, can be used as a form of fertilizer on the fields to help promote crop growth.
