I Want to Know!!
Submitted by angelersk225 on Thu, 06/19/2008 - 5:07pm.
Hi, I'm new to Greenopolis and a little bit confused. A lot of times when I watch TV there are ads and commercials that talk about going green and conserving, and I found that I finally want to do something to help instead of sitting around. I was just surfing Greenopolis when I came across complicated terminology and topics that got me confused. I even have a few questions. If people can answer my questions below that would help me a lot!!! Questions: What exactly is carbon and why is a lot of it so bad for our planet? What other elements are harmful to the environment? What are companies doing nowadays to stop all of that disgusting black smoke I see? What is kwH? What is propane?

Welcome!
I would have replied earlier... but I didn't know the answers to those questions either! Welcome to Greenopolis and thanks for the questions. They definitely helped all of us out.
Thanks Bob for informing all
Thanks Bob for informing all of us and great forum question angelersk225!
Some answers
1. Carbon is an element and is basically good unless it is combined with oxygen or hydrogen which form carbon dioxide and methane which are two leading greenhouse gases caused by burning or rotting materials.
2. Lead, mercury, cadmium are all elements that are harmful in very low concentrations.
3. Companies are doing much better than they did 30-40 years ago in term of visual pollutants. But this is really a case of what you can't see hurting you and the visible pollution is only part of the equation.
4. kwH= Kilowatt Hour or basically 1000 watts consummed in an hours time.
5. Propane is a hydrocarbon gas such as butane or methane. The names denote how complex the molecules are and how many carbon atoms are in the chain of the molecule.
Good luck...
