Children follow the example
Children follow the example their parents, or caregivers set forth. For most this means buying too many clothing items (because of new styles), buying junk food instead of healthy snacks, throwing things away when you don't want them or something is wrong with them, etc, etc.
I teach my children to not want unnecessary things, (especially just because it is "cool" or new), to recycle, to reuse, only dispose of what is necessary, and that with everything there comes a price. Whether or not that is money,or taking someones water supply in a small foreign country. You do really need to start off young with children.
The generations that are coming into adult hood have grown up in a world where everything is disposable, and you can always get a new one of whatever. Parents need to be more responsible for their children, and the impact they and their families are having.
