Exxon Threatening Endangered Whales?

The leading environmental groups in Russia launched a lawsuit on Friday against the gas and oil giant, Exxon, for threatening the world's last Gray Whale population. There are only around 130 of this amazing species left in the world, and the pipeline that will be constructed in their habitat may hurt these numbers even further.

The Russian government has already approved the plans for the pipeline, but this lawsuit will hopefully cause some sort of injunction against the building of this pipeline.

Endangered Ferrets Get The Plague

One of the largest colonies of endangered black-footed ferrets is under attack by a deadly disease called the sylvatic plague that was discovered in May. Wildlife officials have been fighting this plague that is believed to originate in prairie dogs, the main prey of the ferrets.  These ferrets are located in Badlands National Park in South Dakota, which is a 244,000 acre area located in the southwestern section of the state.

The Kakapo is a critically endangered bird located in New Zealand, who's numbers have rebounded recently from a mere 86 to 91. The reason it has been so hard to bring this critically endangered bird's numbers up is because the females only breed when rimu trees fruit is at it's heaviest, which occurs only every three to five years.

Biologist Worried For Endangered Bird

Scientists that measure and study the populations of birds in regions of the Northeast, specifically Seavey Island and the Isle of Shoals, are worried about the Roseate tern population. Numbers of the Roseate tern are down 20% with only 40 pairs of Roseate terns, and 46 Roseate tern chicks being counted this summer.

Gray Wolf Back On The List

After a brief stint on the "threatened list", the gray wolf has been placed back on the endangered species list. The gray wolf of the greater Yellowstone area (northern Rocky Mountains) was removed from the endangered species list in March, making this animal fair game for hunters. The July ruling of Judge Donald W. Molloy of the Federal District Court has placed the animal back under the protection of the Endangered Species Act.

Saving Wolves & Making A Difference!

It feels good to do something that actually brings about some action! Today I received a thank you email from the Defenders of Wildlife organization, thanking me for my participation in the petition drive to stop the killing of Wolves in the Northern Rockies. The Grey Wolf had been taking off the endangered list, and moved to the "Threatened" list, which allowed people to kill these animals.

Endangered Fish Raised... In the Desert?

At New Mexico State University they've taken a look around their desert land... and decided it was perfect for raising Endangered Fish! Silly as it sounds, that's what the University is now doing, by raising at least 7000 silvery minnows at the Mountain Geothermal Fish Culture and Research Facility. This little fish became an endangered species in 1994, and was found in nearly every part of the Rio Grande. Now the fish is found in less than 5-10% of the river.
