The other day conservationists in China celebrated the birth of eight endangered Red Pandas. There were two sets of triplets, a pair of twins and two single Red Pandas. Sadly the twins did not survive, but the conservationists were still exuberant at the birth of 8 baby pandas. The cubs were all born at the Fuzhou Panda World Research Center.

New Manta Ray Discovered

After 5 years of research, scientists have confirmed that a new species of manta ray has been discovered. This is the first time ever a new manta ray has been identified. Until now it was thought that there was only one manta ray species.

The newly-discovered species leads a different lifestyle Manta Rayto its smaller cousin and is migratory rather than residential.

Endangered Turtle Washes Ashore

On the island of Cuttyhunk in Massachusetts, a rare leatherback turtle washed ashore, giving scientists and residents a glimpse of the largest turtle in the world. Word of the rare 500 pound turtle spread quick and people in the community and scientists all came to check it out. The turtle was badly decayed, and scientists weren't even able to tell for sure if it was a male or female. The turtle was tagged in the Caribbean and had most likely migrated with the jellyfish to the Eastern Seaboard. It most likely would've returned to the Caribbean where it was born.

Mysterious Leatherback Now Being Tracked

For years the Leatherback turtle's travel patterns
have been anything but predictable. These sea voyagers are rarely found alive on
beaches and enjoy a life of ocean travels. Now, marine biologists are releasing
clues into the secret lives of these nomad turtles.

Minutes after hatching, male Leatherbacks enter
the water and will not return to the beach...ever. Females only become beached
when laying their eggs. The Leatherback is the world's largest living turtle
and can grow to a monstrous size.

go!

Alarming Rise Of Illegal Animal Trade

Recently there has been an alarming rise in the hunting and trading of illegal animals. In Sumatra, they are seeing a rise in the hunting and trading of the endangered Sumatran Tiger and Elephant. More and more are being arrested with illegal stuffed tigers and tiger skins, which means that even more are getting away with it!

Harrison Ford has recently joined the fight against illegal animal hunting and trading by speaking about endangered animals before his new movie Indiana Jones :

Tasmanian Devil

Australia is reported by the AP to list their Tasmanian devil as an endangered species this week. Apparantly there has been a massive outbreak of cancer in the species that has been fast growing and ends up being leathal. The cancer is said to be a head tumor that spreads to the Tasmanian Devil's face, causing it to not be able to eat. They say that the population of this species has been cut by as much as 60 percent!

Polar Bear Threatened- North Condemns

The US
administration has approved the Polar Bear as a "threatened species"
under the Endangered
Species Act.
This was a victory for many animal activists, but many were
hoping that the bear's new status would be a path to address global warming.
The polar bear has been decreasing in numbers due to shrinking amounts of sea
ice which the bears hunt on, which has been resulting in less young being
produced and surviving.

Gardening for wildlife

As summer approaches I've been debating what kind of garden to have this
year. Last year I tilled a small portion of my backyard and planted all kinds
of plants, but was only able to grow some tomatoes. Since I wasn't able to grow anything to substantial as food, I was doing some research
about gardening for other purposes and came across the National Wildlife Federation's "Garden For Wildlife"
section of their website.

Wolverine Numbers Getting Low

Wolverine

Yesterday the Federal Government has said that although the numbers for Wolverines in the US are low, they are not yet low enough to warrant an "endangered" lable. According to the government's numbers, there are 500 to 600 animals spread over thousands of square miles in Montana, Idaho, Washington and Wyoming.

Should We Reintroduce Dangerous Animals?

There are a number of endangered species that have been wiped out in certain areas (such as the grey wolf from New England). Do you think states should reintroduce these animals into these areas that they originally lived?

Grey Wolf Returns To Mass

According to an article on Boston.com, the Grey Wolf has not been in Massachusetts in about 160 years. Last fall, a wild Eastern gray wolf was seen on a farm Western Massachusetts before it was shot and killed after it had mauled over a dozen lambs. The Wolf was completely run out of Massachusetts by hunters in the 1850's, to eliminate the threat to their livestock.

The Canadian Lynx is Amazing

I was going though the National Wildlife Federation website today and one animal on the front page caught my eye. The Canadian Lynx (see image below) caught my eye because I don't think I've ever seen a picture of one before! I went on to read about how there's really no way to know how many exist in the US, because of how secretive and stealthly they are.

Woo Hoo- Grey Wolf Off Endangered List

I have personally watched a bunch of documentaries on wolfs, and although they are brutal animals that will kill almost anything, they are very intelligent, beautiful animals have their part in nature. Yesterday, the US Department of the Interior has that the Grey Wolf has been officially taken off of the endangered species list. After years of conservation (13 to be exact), they have rebounded to over 1500 wolves in Colorado, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. A year ago the Grey Wolf was also taken off the endangered species list in the western Great Lakes region.

Animal adoption vital in California

I just saw an article (see it
here
) from California about the
importance of the adoption of animals. Recently the mortgage crisis has forced
a lot of people out of their homes, and had to give up their pets to the animal
rescue agencies. I have lived in LA, and even without this new crisis there
were always tons of dogs that needed adoption.
