Are you planning to plant a garden this spring?

Potted Garden

Our condo doesn't really love the idea of digging up property to plant a garden plus our yard is so small I'd hate to detract from my son's play areas. I do however plan on planting a few potted vegetables for him that he can learn to care for himself (he's 3 and I figure learning to pull weeds is a good chore, plus he'll get to have muddy fingers!)

Anyone have any experience with kid friendly (aka ready to eat quick veggies) that are easy enough to grow? I've been thinking carrots and peas and maybe since he loves them so much tomatoes (personally I'm not a big fan, but I have a strange love of the smell of vines). I'd love to do cucumbers and some form of peppers (other favourites) but have read they may require a bit extra work?

Until the other day I was sure spring was here, but now it's snowing again and I'm stuck at wishful thinking about a garden I can use....months from now.

Garden

dont forget green beans. They grow really well and are very good for you. Have fun with your son and let him get muddy!!!!

Growing up, my family always had a large garden. One of my favorites was butternut squash. I loved the huge blooms, and I love to see what shape the fruit had taken! You might even see about trying to grow a pumpkin, that way your son can watch it grow for Halloween (if that is a holiday your family participates in). The nice thing about squash is that they are usually pretty easy going, and don’t require a huge amount of upkeep.

Let us know how it goes!

Pumpkin!

I love the idea of a pumpkin!! I'll have to research to see if they can survive here with the potential quick freeze. Its a good thing my father-in-law had a garden before they moved.

I'm very very excited every day that it is warm out, its only a hint at things to come.

I've also timed the walk from our house to the local farmer's market, and while it only happens every Thursday evening, its a completely feasible walk to be making.

I cannot wait for spring to officially arrive :)

I only have a small patio, so I have to use pots to grow anything. But I am looking forward to planting strawberries, carrots, and maybe some zucchini and acorn squash!

If anyone has any suggestions or tips, I would love to hear what you have to say!
