Not always easy

My little man turned 3!

I just discovered today while making lunch that my husband is not so up on watching what he throws away and what he recycles, I found a perfectly good cardboard box in the garbage.

I think if we weren't dealing w/ a 3 year old's few diapers (we're down to 1 over night and one nap/quiet time one) our garbage would easily be below 1 bag a week. I try to do things like buying bulk and then the plastic bags can be recycled, or buying in large quantities (assuming we have the room for storage - which we usually do) and this usually means not buying ready pack products.

We also reuse things like toilet paper rolls for crafts before trying to recycle whatever is left over.

I have a friend who lives in the country who burn anything they can...I've questioned how good this is (more like argued that its not so hard to have a blue bin/bag/container of some sort for junk mail or such things), but she argues that at least it doesn't go in the land fill....

Thoughts on that?

Growing up, we had a barrel that we burned most things in, and what we didn’t burn, we would take to the landfill (Note: we actually went to the landfill, not just a transfer station. What a sight!). Burning is probably bad, as you are... well, burning things. But one could also argue that it is not bad to throw paper into a landfill, as it is biodegradable. So… I think the burning of garbage is an argument worthy of further research!

Todays landfills are tommorrows archaeological digs!
What? Biodegradable? In a landfill? Not so much.

I live alone, and recycle heavily, so my trash output is minimal. I am wondering what larger households do, if anything, to reduce the amount of trash that they generate?
