Recycling is great, but the best thing to do is simply to not use as much and try to re-use as much as you can. Even if you recycle, any new item you buy is using new resources in some percentage or other which is adding to the drain.

Recycle, Reuse, Buy Less, Do ALL You Can

Recycling is good but it is mainly you separate the garbage and submit it and then "they" deal with it and you may or may not notice what they do next.

Buying fewer items is good but not enough.

Not caring is a teenage or younger male attitude - when a person might think of oneself and the earth as immortal and only losers die or something like that.

Basically try not only to recycle and buy less but also reuse what you can - plastic bags to shop, glass and plastic containers to keep things, paper and plastic shopping bags to use for garbage bags (so there is less need to buy yet more and to manufacture yet more plastic bags) and so on.

If you buy large coffee bottles they can be used to store small quantities of grains and beans and so on, or even to make yogurt shakes and so on (provided they have plastic and not metal caps). These are examples of how to make best of what you get and have and do better for the earth (and your pocket too).

As for some other stuff buying less is good idea.

Buy less & make more stuff from scratch. Our trash used to be mostly wrappers & yogurt cups that aren't recyclable. Now we make yogurt & granola bars from scratch and have really cut down on our waste.

Also, composting is like magic, it seems to magically disappear.

compost!

I would second the composting idea - it provides you with great organic fertilizer / plant food, and cuts way back on waste - plus it keeps garbage from stinking. I've had quite a few 'worm-box' compost operations in living rooms and kitchens of apartments as well, so you don't need a big yard to compost just about everything bio-degradable.

I would do all 3 and start

I would do all 3 and start composting, that would really reduce the amount of waste produced.

I still would not buy one darn thing from the Neiman Marcus Christmas Catalog.  It takes pretentious to the next level.  How can anyone justify spending $73,000 on a cell phone studded with 7.2 carats of white and pink diamonds?  Or buying your ...
