Meredith Sorensen Travel Blog

Hi. Pleased to meet you. My name is Meredith Sorensen, and I like trash. More specifically, I am intrigued by all of the things associated with trash such as recycling, composting, and waste reduction. I especially like to look at people’s behavior, attitudes, and beliefs surrounding trash.

In 2008-2009, I received a fellowship to follow this passion (trashion!): I traveled to Europe and Central America to look at the waste management strategies of different communities. Greenopolis has kindly invited me to share some of my findings.

Here is a sneak peak at my proposed Trash Tour Itinerary:

  • WEEK 1: Introduction
  • WEEK 2: Bins and Behavior
  • WEEK 3: Shaping Behavior through Dog Poop
  • WEEK 4: Down Dog Mama
  • WEEK 5: Signage: The Power of Line Art, Clear Text, Colors, and Arrows
  • WEEK 6: (Appropriate) Technology: Suck or Sweep
  • WEEK 7: (Appropriate) Technology: Pay As You Throw (Belgium)
  • WEEK 8: (Appropriate) Technology: Compost.
  • WEEK 9: Behavior: Give Me Your Donuts
  • WEEK 10: Where the Cows Eat Diapers (It's Why The Meat Is So Tender)
  • WEEK 11: Keep This Bus Clean: Throw Your Garbage Out the Window
  • WEEK 12: Plan It Planet: Start Where You Care

My plan, fair readers, is to use trash as a springboard for broader conversations about human behavior. So pack your (garbage) bags: we’re going on a trash tour!

At your disposal,

Meredith

Re: How did you do it?

Hi Casey -

Great questions.

I had one of those "click moments" in life in 2004 while I was hiking the length of Madagascar.  (That's another story.)  Anyways, I realized, at that moment, that I have always had a deeply rooted interested in waste management.  I needed to follow that passion.

When I moved back to the States in 2005, I went for the education (getting my Masters in Public Administration) and professional development (managing a recycling program for Portland International Airport) that would launch my career into the world of solid waste.

I received the fellowship from my (well endowed, heh) undergraduate school, Wellesley College.
