Meet the Porsche 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid concept and begin drooling!
At the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, Porsche unveiled a hybrid supercar that gets 78 MPG and does 0 to 60 in just 3.2 seconds. In fact, it's faster than Porsche's latest supercar, the Carrera GT. Meet the Porsche 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid concept and begin drooling!
This is both exciting and surprising news. Just a few months ago, Porsche CEO Michael Macht said the company had no interest in hybrid versions of their sports cars. In fact, his take on hybrids all together wasn't very promising.
“It’s technically possible but it’s not part of the plan. It also adds weight,” said Macht. “We want brake regeneration and stop-start for our sports cars, but not hybrid. They’re not driven in the city, where you get most of the advantages [of a hybrid].”
The company does offer hybrid version of the Cayenne, but it's worth noting that the SUV and the 4-door Panamera are sore subjects amongst Porsche fans. They think Porsche should stick to sports cars. And if they're going to make sports cars like this hybrid Spyder...so do I!
The 918 Spyder is a parallel hybrid so both the gas and electric powertrains can operate together or separately. It has a top speed of about 200 MPH, gets 78 MPG, and emits just 70 grams of CO2 per kilometer--the third-generation Toyota Prius emits 89 grams. A typical supercar emits emit between 400 and 500 grams. It's powered by both a 500-horsepower V8 and a pair of electric motors (one for each axle) producing an additional 218 horsepower or 160kW.
There are four modes in which the car can run. E-Drive mode is pure electric where the car has a limited range of 16 miles. Hybrid mode is just as it sounds. Sports Hybrid mode uses both powertrains, like Hybrid mode, but dips in to the petro a bit more. Race Hybrid mode means you best buckle up, Porsche says it can take Nordschleife in less than 7:30 minutes.
“We are a sports car manufacturer and that means it's about driving fast – but at the same time about cutting pollution and conserving natural resources,” Porsche chief Michael Macht said according to the website of news magazine Der Spiegel.
I'm sold, when can I test drive it?
