Clean Energy- Is it a lost cause?

Every day the top headlines of every news program are about the high oil prices, the new record price of a barrel of oil etc. This is not new news, and I find it funny how quickly everyone forgets the Oil Crisis of 1973!

Here we are again as oil consumers, bowing to OAPEC and the Arab nations. Thirty five years later, everyone jumped into big SUVs and forgot what happens when our oil consumption rises from an economical viewpoint, let alone an environmental viewpoint.

So what will happen? I believe one of two things will likely happen, OAPEC will drop the price of oil through policy changes and distribution changes on this commodity and everyone will jump back into their SUVs and forget about this current "Oil Crisis" once again. Another option would be that the world moves to alternative forms of energy to power vehicles... this energy would most likely be the fuel cell. This would be a great development as it would take our dependence somewhat off of oil, and it would reduce emissions by autos, but this would also turn our power companies into the sole provider of energy. Remember that most electricity is generated by COAL, which is the far from green.

I feel that when people's pocketbooks and wallets are hurting, the environment will end up paying the price. Just think if someone could prove that: "If we drill in for oil Alaska, the price of gas will be $1.00 tomorrow", do you think that majority of Americans would be on board? Then 20-30 years down the road when that oil runs out, or people start using even MORE oil for their even bigger vehicles or whatever the trend might be, we will be back in the same predicament we're in today.
