Carbon Shredders is a Mad River Valley-based conservation and education group, dedicated to helping people and institutions save money on energy costs, create a clean energy future for the community and reduce our collective energy usage and C02 footprint by 10% by 2010 through our "10 by 10" initiative.
Shred Don't Dread!
It's cool to Shred. Your grandchildren will thank you for it. Your wallet will be fatter. You'll sleep better at night.
The Benefits offered by Carbon Shredders are numerous:
- Save $ money! The average household that reduces energy use and C02 emissions by 10% through efficiency will save $700 per year. One member of our steering team was able to reduce their annual power bill by over $1200, saved $1500/year on heating costs, and saved $1000/year at the gas pump, without sacrifice to quality of life.
- Save the planet! Over fifty percent of the the C02 emissions in the US are from households, including commuting transportation. EPA and other groups estimate that 50% of this household energy-use could be eliminated simply through efficiency programs using tools and technologies that are currently available. We're not talking about solar panels on your roof and trading your car in for a horse-drawn carriage (although this isn't a bad idea). We are simply saying: calculate your energy use and C02 footprint, let our program walk you through the steps to painlessly reduce this, and save at least $700 per year.
- Beyond Efficiency and the Low Carbon Diet, our Next Steps will be to create cooperative buying groups to make renewable energy and efficiency systems AFFORDABLE and AVAILABLE to Vermont communities. Get involved so you don't miss out!
- Community Involvement: Do you want to live in a bubble, or would you like to have an engaging and rewarding connection to your community? Learn from the experience of others. Share your experience and perspective. Celebrate with optimism.
Carbon 101
The average American draws energy from several different sources in their combined household and travel consumption, equivalent to the energy from 952 gallons of gasoline per year. According to the EPA, the resulting footprint of CO2 emitted per year equals 9.44 tons per person. In the Mad River Valley for example, based on 2600 households and 6,100 residents, this equates to 2,240 gallons of gasoline and 22.2 tons of CO2 annually. If every MRV household reduced its annual energy usage (and thereby CO2 emissions) by 10%, each household would save about $694 (based on $3.10 for a gallon of gas). This would reduce the annual carbon footprint of the valley by 1,588,400 pounds and put an extra $1,811,340 in the pockets of local residents annually. To not do anything at all about our carbon emissions here in the Valley could well result in major losses to our tourism economy, our sugaring potential, and other climate-related implications affecting our local food supply and future lives here. The solution that Carbon Shredders proposes is to start saving and reducing now.
