Green (Environmental Assessment) Services for Greenopolis
CHSR offers distinct environmental assessment (EA) capabilities and services, which can be tailored to meet your particular needs and requirements. The CHSR’s goal in performing these services is to help develop robust, versatile, and environmentally-responsible technologies.
Environmental Assessment areas:
- Life cycle environmental evaluations
- Remediation feasibility review
- Environmental, safety, and occupational health (ESOH) assessments for non-lethal defense technologies and for land areas
Our staff also has experience in performing assessments for public- and commercial-sector clients, as well.
Sustainability and environmental management systems evaluation protocols and computational tools are being explored to assist public and private sector managers, technical experts, and communities in meeting green design objectives, regulatory requirements, and socioeconomic goals.
These initiatives can benefit collaborators with measuring, monitoring, and communicating (continuous) quality improvements. The range of technical services and expertise offered is diverse and flexible, including: preliminary screening assessments, site-specific sampling and analysis, scientific research studies, public outreach, and comprehensive report generation.

Welcome
The Center for Hazardous Substance Research was established in 1989 and is part of the College of Engineering at Kansas State University. The purpose of the center is to conduct research, education, and service pertaining to environmental topics, where a reputable, neutral organization is needed to develop technically sound, consensus-based solutions for diverse groups of stakeholders.
Topics of research
- Sustainability
- Environmental assessments and remediation
- Technical assistance to communities, defense agencies and other organizations; and international programs.
Environmental assessment work involves proposed nonlethal defense technologies, and software tools forenvironmental decision making.
Remediation research has focused on contaminated soil and water from agriculture, forestry, mining, and mineral processing, and other industrial activities. Service activities include providing free technical assistance to citizens and other stakeholders who are providing input on cleanup and re-use of EPA Superfund, Brownfield, tribal, and other types of sites.
We are host to several programs, listed below:
Sustainability Initiatives
The CHSR provides educational programs on sustainability, participates in related research at KSU, and is home to the Consortium for Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability (CESAS). The purpose is to provide reliable information to the general public and all types of organizations to promote informed, sustainable intentions and actions.
Community Outreach (EPA TOSC, TAB, and TOSNAC)
The Center for Hazardous Substance Research provides free technical assistance to communities affected by hazardous substance issues at EPA Superfund, Brownfield, tribal, and other types of sites. This is achieved by working with all stakeholders and agencies to provide educational information, technical review services, and assistance with community outreach efforts. The EPA TOSC and TOSNAC programs ended on August 31, 2006. The TAB program continues to serve brownfields communities. KSU may continue to provide technical assistance at Superfund and Native American sites through other programs. Please click on the Outreach link for information on other technical assistance programs.
International Programs
Kansas State University, with partners Haskell Indian Nations University, University of Kansas, The Civil Society Group, LLC., and University of Gorno-Altaisk, act to advance further collaboration between the United States and Gorno-Altaisk State University. The international programs promote cultural, educational, and research cooperation in all fields of academic endeavor.
Urban Operations Laboratory (UOL)
The UOL explores emerging technologies designed to enhance the nonlethal capabilities of ground forces conducting Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT) while minimizing collateral effects on non-combatants and the environment. The U.S. Mariene Corps Systems Command is the principal sponsor of the UOL.
The Great Plains/Rocky Mountain Hazardous Substance Research Center (GP/RM HSRC)
The grant funding period for the GP/RM HSRC has concluded, but information regarding the center's research projects is still available online. The center was established in 1989 to conduct research pertaining to hazardous substances produced through agriculture, forestry, mining, mineral processing, and other activities. It served EPA Federal Regions 7 and 8.
The National Environmental Evaluation and Remediation Consortium (NEER)
The National Environmental Evaluation and Remediation (NEER) Consortium performs environmental research, training, assessments, product development, and community assistance projects, where a reputable, neutral organization is needed to coordinate technically sound, consensus-based solutions for diverse groups of stakeholders. NEER consists of the following partners, Kansas State University, Center for Hazardous Substance Research, NanoScale Materials, Inc., CABEM Inc., and M2 Technologies, Inc.
The National Institute for Land Management and Training (NILMT)
The National Institute for Land Management Training (NILMT) provides nationwide technical support for the U.S. Army Integrated Training Area Management (ITAM) program and related activities. It provides natural resources conservation and management services, GIS assistance, R&D for land management systems, and creates educational materials using video, computer-based multimedia training, and distance learning.
Other K-State Programs
Girls Researching Our World (GROW)
The Girls Researching Our World program was designed to create and support a network of faculty, staff and students at Kansas State University, working in partnership with school districts, other colleges and universities, industries, and not-for-profit organizations. GROW brings these groups together in partnership through various events and activities. Network members work to ensure that girls and women receive support as they pursue their interests in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
Students for Environmental Action (SEA)
Students for Environmental Action is a student run organization at Kansas State University working to save and protect the environment.
Natural Resources & Environmental Science Program
The Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences (NRES) Secondary Major provides an interdisciplinary overlay for relevant primary majors. Its focus is to broaden students' perspectives, both through course offerings and through interactions with students from other disciplines. The educational goal of the NRES program is to prepare undergraduate students to apply broadly-based scientific knowledge to the use, management, sustainability, and quality of soil, air, water, mineral, biological, and energy resources.
