Linde—Leading to Make a Difference in the World

We take a positive position on issues such as emissions, waste disposal, chemical use and energy consumption.

Numerous programs are underway within Linde worldwide that demonstrate a proactive, business led and determined approach to addressing environmental issues.

Voluntary declaration of corporate responsibility

The company has a comprehensive social responsibility program and works hard to be a trusted and responsible member of the communities in which we work and live. From hauling our loads safely through the communities in which our plants operate, to the safe operation of those plants, world-class product stewardship and our support of the United Way and the Habitat for Humanity, Linde constantly strives to make a difference to the world.

Our vision includes being a leading company in the area of safety, health, environment and product quality (SHEQ). The company’s commitment to achieving this vision is evidenced by its long standing membership in the American Chemistry Council (ACC), and its participation as a Responsible Care® partner. Linde is dedicated to maintaining open communications and community outreach with all of our stakeholders.

Building a sustainable future

Environmental awareness can also create business opportunities

As industrial companies face increasing statutory and stakeholder pressure to minimize their impact on the environment, Linde has found that environmental awareness can also create business opportunities. Our commitment to developing sustainable solutions for the ‘Triple Bottom Line’ is articulated by this paraphrased statement by Professor Dr Wolfgang Reitzle, CEO of The Linde Group relative to Linde’s world-class capabilities in hydrogen fueling:

“Worldwide energy consumption is increasing steadily in line with the continuing growth of the world's population and the economic development of newly industrializing countries. Therefore, today more than ever we are faced with the problem of finding an environment-friendly energy source. In response to this global challenge, we are committed to researching and further developing hydrogen technology. As an experienced gas specialist and one of the world's largest hydrogen providers, Linde is well positioned to contribute to achieving this goal.”

Landfill gas into vehicle fuel

LNG Liquefaction System

Another example of Linde’s leading capabilities in sustainable solutions is represented by a joint venture between Linde North America and Waste Management that will create the world’s largest facility to turn landfill gas into vehicle fuel.

Linde, the leading global gases and engineering company, and Waste Management, North America’s largest waste management company, are starting work on a renewable fuel project, located at the Altamont Landfill in Livermore, California. Linde will install systems to purify and liquefy the landfill gas Waste Management collects from the natural decomposition of organic compounds in the landfill. When the facility begins operating in 2009 it will be able to produce up to 13,000 gallons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) a day. Waste Management will use the LNG to fuel its fleet of trash trucks, many of which have natural gas engines. As a result, trash collection in California is about to get a lot cleaner.
