Recycling impact

Think about it: how many recyclable items do you personally come in contact with each day? Worldwide, more than 800 billion beverage bottles and cans alone are manufactured and sold each year. Add to that the billions of containers used for milk, juice, food, detergent and other consumer products, and one can see that the universe of packaging material consumed worldwide is truly enormous.

Packaging material is often manufactured from attractive and valuable materials such as plastics (which is made from oil), aluminium, steel, glass or paper and cardboard. And while all these materials are recyclable, the unfortunate fact is that most of these materials are still being sent to landfills or worse yet end up as litter in the environment.

TOMRA's business is to help develop, implement and operate effective and efficient systems capable of recovering the resource- and monetary value of packaging and other used materials. Each year systems provided by TOMRA collect and recycle about 26 billion used beverage containers, about three percent of the world's annual consumption. It is estimated that the used beverage container material which is collected and handled through TOMRA's products and operations during one year saves more than 1.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
