The Chevrolet Volt is an electric vehicle with a "range extender". Well, what does that mean? It means the Volt runs on electricity from its battery, and then it runs on electricity it creates from gas. I'm told you can drive up to 40 miles on the electricity stored in the battery - totally gas and emissions free. After that, its gas-powered, range-extending generator automatically kicks in to provide electrical power. So Volt can go for several hundred additional miles, until you can plug it in or fill it up again. Almost sounds too good to be true.

Melissa McGinnis and Greenopolis TV visit with president and founder of CollectiveGood Seth Heine to discuss the importance of recycling your mobile phone. Seth informs us that mobile phones and other mobile devices (pagers, PDAs) present a growing threat to the environment. As of 2009, there are more than 1 Billion mobile phones waiting to be recycled in the US; either in drawers, or already in the waste stream. Another 160+ million or so will be added this year and even more next year.

Olympian Gold winner Greg Louganis says "It's the little things that make a difference." He should know, he is considered the greatest diver of all time, Greg Louganis won gold medals at the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Games on both the springboard and platform. He is the only male and the second diver in Olympic history to sweep the diving events in consecutive Olympic Games and he was the first diver to receive perfect 10’s on a dive in international competition when he did so at the 1982 World Championships.

Avatar has nine Oscar nominations and is poised to become the highest-grossing movie of all time, but the film is also contributing to a bit of forward-thinking eco-friendliness - not just in its underlying message, but by recycling the 3-D glasses. In fact, USA Today reports that if all the 3-D glasses, roughly 42.1 million pair, were to be laid end-to-end, they would stretch over 3,987 miles! That is a lot of landfill space. You can help by choosing a local theater that is participating in this recycling program... it's easy!

For the first time in Olympic history, the medals at the Olympic Games contain gold, silver and copper that has been recovered from electronic waste (e-waste). Each medal was made with a tiny bit of the more than 140,000 tons of e-waste that otherwise would have been sent to Canadian landfills. More than 1,000 medals to be awarded at the Vancouver games this year.

The recovery of medals from e-waste is important, because it reduces demand for scarce metals such as gold and copper. Check in your community for e-waste recycling centers and drop off points and go for GOLD..

We all end up between the sheets daily. Why not sleep more soundly with organic cotton sheets! Conventionally grown cotton uses more insecticides than any other single crop and epitomizes the worst effects of chemically dependent agriculture. Each year cotton producers around the world use nearly $2.6 billion worth of pesticides - more than 10% of the world's pesticides and nearly 25% of the world's insecticides. The pesticides used on cotton even when used according to instructions harm people, wildlife and the environment.

Because I carry a tote most places I rarely see or get gift bags. But this year I received a early Valentines gift, given to me in a gift bag. I have to say that I am glad that this gift was not re-wrapped but given as is to cut down on more useless wrapping. The bag had pink tissue paper stuffed inside and although I thought the gift and bag were beautiful I knew I had to think of ways to re-use these materials...so I came up with a brown and pink heart theme for the kitchen, my own recycled Valentines Hearts!
