A Cup of Joe for my Face?
For a guy whose idea of upscale facial care is soap-on-a-rope, this is a radical idea, even if my name is Joe. But hey, I gave it a try and it worked well. I'm waiting to see if daily application of the grounds will darken the spreading grey in my beard. Then Melissa will have a convert for life, and I won't have to walk around telling people that I'm just reverting to my natural platinum blond. Yes, guys have vanity too, even those of us who aren't practicing metrosexuals.
Besides, I come from a long line of men who try to get every single bit of use out of everything. The New Frugality is all the rage, fueled by the current recession and an awareness that we can't keep consuming all we want forever, we need to make things last. But for generations my ancestors were shaving the remains of soap bars to make laundry detergent, using old jars for nails and screws, even recycling old houses into the building materials for the next one. And they'd never throw out a pot of cold coffee, they'd just add a little more water and reheat it or give it to their wives to use in some recipe. The grounds went on the garden. If only they'd known they could use them to clean those hard working faces I knew and loved!
Well, not only does this make a lot of sense environmentally and cosmetically, but I'm going to keep doing it in honor of my thrifty forbears. Just so long as I don't wake up in the middle of the night dreaming of a dermatologist. And I don't think I'll try it with my double shot Mocchacino. Bottoms Up!
